Gabriella Callender is a songwriter, singer, producer, guitarist, poet, community organizer, voice over artist, workshop facilitator, Life Coach and musical director of the three -woman performance ensemble, Mahina Movement.
Gabby’s music has reached over one hundred thousand people. She has performed in music and spoken word venues, universities , museums, music festivals , elementary school classrooms , rallies , marches and demonstrations from California to New York including Lincoln Center Out of Doors, La Pena Cultural Center, El Museo Del Barrio, The Bowery Poetry Club, The Nuyorican Poetry Café, Theatres Against War, La Pregunta Café, The Queens Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The March for World Peace, The United Nations, The Brooklyn Ethical Society and many, many more. Community and Music are what Gabby is all about As an organizer and activist, Gabby produces and performs at events that combine her twin passions and make a difference in her communities . Gabby was both producer and performer for 50 Artists, 50 shots, an artistic response to the acquittal of the officers who pumped 50 shots into Sean Bell the night before his wedding. She participated in the production of SoulNation, a monthly series featuring local artists , many of whom have gone on to be featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and T.E.D. Gabby also has a heart for women in prison, many of whom are there because they assaulted or murdered abusive husbands or boyfriends. She was privileged to share her music at the WORTH Empowerment Benefit for former women’s prisoners in 2009.
Gabby is currently a featured actor in acclaimed underground theater artist Ping Chong’s Theatre Production, Undesirable Elements::Secret Survivors:. She also appears in Jessica Chen Drammeh’s documentary film Anomaly, a sensitive and incisive insider’s look at the experiences of multiracial Americans. Anomaly was recently shown at BAM. Right now, Gabby is working on her debut solo album Stop Traffic, to be released during fall/winter 2010.
